Sir, - In his letter to The Irish Times (July 11) on behalf of the NUJ chapel of Independent Newspapers, Kevin Moore alleges that in my comments on the murder of Veronica Guerin (June 28th) I attempted to declare that she was not murdered because she was a journalist.

I accept that what I wrote was ambiguous and has given rise to misunderstanding.again, this time specifically to her colleagues in Independent Newspapers.

But just for the record, what I did write was Veronica Guerin was murdered very probably for reasons that had nothing to do with anything she wrote or anything she was planning to write. It is not possible to be any more specific about the likely reasons for her killing because of restrictions on press freedom. The same restrictions on press freedom retained by those (John Bruton, Dick Spring, Proinsias de Rossa Mary Harne et all) who have expressed such concern about press freedom in the light of her murder.

I should have added that it was none the less obvious that probably she was murdered in connection with an incident arising from her work as a journalist. Yours, etc.
