Veto change at the UN

Sir, – The reforms agreed at the UN, where the General Assembly would have to meet within 10 days and debate the issue, in cases where any of the five permanent members of the Security Council have exercised a veto, are welcomed because it could hold them to greater account for their use of that veto ("Ireland backs reform of UN Security Council veto", News, April 26th). Unfortunately if these vetoes cannot be overturned by a majority vote of the General Assembly, the reforms are in danger of becoming a vehicle for further delay, obfuscation and ridicule. Perhaps Ireland might seek to ensure that in future the vetoes can be overturned by a majority vote of the General Assembly. If successful it could give the UN real teeth. – Yours, etc,
