DAVID CHAPMAN,
Madam, - Surely it would be possible for the Government to tax the portrayal of violence by the media. Cigarettes carry a Government Health Warning and a substantial tax to discourage smoking. Couldn't the same apply to violence in videos and films?
As Kathryn Holmquist points out in her article "A Childhood Contaminated by Fear" (Education & Parenting, October 29th), the creation of a climate of aggression and violence costs society's health and wellbeing dearly. If people want to be subjected to violence in videos and films, let them pay for it. Yours, etc.,
DAVID CHAPMAN, Gracedieu Road, Waterford.
