Wage rates and competitiveness

Madam, – Michael J

Madam, – Michael J. McNamara (January 29th) comments that the minimum hourly wage in Ireland is 40 per cent higher than in the UK.

Elsewhere in the same edition there is a report of an HSE campaign to entice Irish-born GPs back to Ireland. This points out that “the earning potential of GPs in Ireland is more attractive than that in the UK”.

A quick Google check reveals that “the average British GP now earns more than £100,000 a year, with many earning over £250,000.

How much “more attractive” can we afford to be? – Yours, etc,
