Sir, – On a recent visit to Norfolk and Suffolk, we marvelled at the access to the countryside that English people enjoy. We had seen in previous visits to upland areas extensive rights of way, signposted and provided with either stiles or gates. This area was no different, despite being largely agricultural, with pasture and cereal growing. One of the circular walks we traversed included woodland and pasture. On one stretch, the well-trodden path crossed a cornfield.
We pride ourselves on being a republic, yet we cannot find a way to open up our countryside to our citizens. – Yours, etc,
