Walking To School

Sir, - Michael J. McCann (September 14th) cannot be serious

Sir, - Michael J. McCann (September 14th) cannot be serious. The reason many parents drive their children to school is because the children's schoolbags weigh up to one third of their body weight. The recommended maximum weight for schoolbags is one tenth of body weight. Measures such as the provision of school lockers are not always successful. Lockers are expensive to install, and few schools can afford the space and money to provide a locker for each child. Perhaps Mr McCann should try walking to work carrying a bag weighing one third of his body weight, but then - as his letter seems to indicate - he appears to use a car to carry out his business, so the question does not really arise. - Yours, etc.,

G. Neville, Cork.
