War against the West and skin-deep diversity

Sir, – The attack in Copenhagen (and in Paris) is not a war against the West.

It is a clash of the powerful global branding and technology skills of Islamist fundamentalism against glib, outmoded 18th-century pieties about freedom of expression, and against very smug lifestyles in societies where the values of equality, diversity and multi-culturalism are just skin deep.

Perhaps Dr Kevin McCarthy (Letters, February 17th) might consider why so many feel the former state of affairs resonates more soundly for them than the latter, and the latter's role in creating such an appeal. – Yours, etc, JUDITH GOLDBERGER Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
