Sir, – I found the treatment of our Taoiseach in Athlone on Monday very unfair and unsavoury. To be left a legacy of debt and destruction by the previous administration is bad enough, but to be blamed for emigration and told to take the bridge back to the west is despicable.

We would be in a similar position to our Greek brothers and sisters had not this Government taken the steps it has thus far.

Sir, – François Hollande was proclaimed president of France with the simple and powerful words “You embody France. You symbolise the Republic” (World News, May 16th). It must have felt good to be French on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel proud to be Irish when I read that the Taoiseach told a protester in Athlone on Monday that he could do with a day’s work (Dáil Report, May 16th). Perhaps the Taoiseach could do with some French lessons? – Yours, etc,
