Sir, - Maire Geoghegan-Quinn (Opinion, August 28th) has dismissed the proposed new warden service as worthless. It is ironic that she picks a drug-dealing scenario in a city park to prove her point as it is precisely such places that are suffering from a lack of supervision. The absence of adequate supervisory structures for urban parks is being exploited by extreme anti-social elements like drug dealers and the loss of amenity at community level is considerable.

The proposed uniformed warden service, if properly put in place, could in my view become the framework for the effective supervision and monitoring of city parks and could be critical in restoring them to full community use. - Yours, etc.,
