EDWARD D. RAFFERTY,
Sir, - As a self-proclaimed advocate of efficient and environmentally friendly waste management, I was delighted to hear both Waterford and Wexford county managers had overruled their council members' rejections of a solid waste incinerator.
I believe those nay-sayers were not only ill- informed as to the emission output standards of modern waste incineration technology, but caved in to the alarmist demands of a small, albeit vocal NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) cartel.
Interestingly enough, when challenged to propose a safer and more efficient method of waste disposal, these very same incinerator antagonists inevitably respond with a blank stare and a deep breath.
Indiscriminate dumping and failure to recycle effectively have brought this country to the brink of an ecological disaster. It is time for the Government and citizens to act responsibly and endorse the only sensible solution to a problem that can no longer be ignored.
Thanks to the courage and foresight of county managers Donal Connolly and Seamus Dooley, the south-east is leading the way toward adoption of efficient, cost-effective and safe solid waste disposal. - Yours, etc.,
EDWARD D. RAFFERTY, Grogan's Road, Wexford Town.
