Sir, - The waste incinerator (thermal treatment plant) proposed for the Ringsend/ Sandymount area is less than one kilometre from the Irish Glass Bottle factory, two thirds of a kilometre from Bisset's Engineering Works, and a very doubtful kilometre from the Rehabilitation Institute. In addition, the proposed site is less than half a kilometre from Irishtown Nature Park and the National Heritage area of Sandymount Strand.
Selection factors which preclude the siting of a thermal treatment plant in any particular area include proximity to a proposed natural heritage area (see page 6 of the Consultant Engineer's Report summary). How then did the consultants arrive at the conclusion that this site is suitable, when both workers and other members of the public would be exposed to emissions, and the site is so close to a natural heritage area?
A previous application for a waste incinerator in the area was refused by Dublin Corporation itself and by An Bord Pleanala. - Yours, etc.,
(Mrs) Lorna Kelly, Secretary, Environmental Sub Committee, Sandymount and Merrion Residents' Association, Dublin 4.
