Madam, - I am holding in my hand a book, Finest Hour, whose cover photograph shows six young, brave fighter pilots scrambling to their Hurricanes to intercept a German bombing raid over England in 1940. One of those men was my uncle, then aged 20.
I turn my attention to my daughter of the same age bemoaning the effects of the night before and how intolerably difficult life is in general.
The question I ask myself is: how has my generation got it so wrong? - Yours, etc.,
