Sir. – I cannot wait until the next protest meeting against water charges where I presume there will be a collective burning of the €100 grant cheques.

Sir, – Irish Water is not just beyond satire as Angela Polsen-Emy suggests (Letters, August 21st), it is now beyond belief.
Only 43 per cent of households have paid the water charge, but all 70 per cent who have registered will be given €100 by the government.
Thus, the delinquent 37 per cent of households (all 614,200 of them) will be financially rewarded for boycotting the charge.
Payment for non-payment – at a cost of €61 million – is the politics of the Mad Hatter’s tea party.
