Sir, – I suggest that the State has proven its point regarding maths and science and their value to the economy as seen by the increased number of higher level maths candidates in the Leaving Certificate and the increased points for relevant courses.
In the interest of foreign direct investment and job opportunities, an issue recently highlighted by IBEC, it is high time that the State began to incentivise, in the same way, the study of languages.
The numbers studying languages are worryingly low.
Let’s up the ante linguistically and finally give languages the place they deserve in education and society.– Yours, etc,
