Sir, - Recently Dick Walsh wrote a splendid article about the lack of will with regard to poverty in the present political climate. In his column of September 26th he refers to the housing crisis, the lack of social cohesion, the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots, the fact that the good days never arrived for so many and how people like Mary Harney and Charlie McCreevy, in particular, do more to hurt the already downtrodden than most.
I know what it feels like on the ground. I know how it sounds when the aforementioned duo in particular release their venomous rhetoric. My heart breaks at the lack of wisdom, grace and intelligence among politicians, but my spirits life when people like Dick Walsh - and a few more - use their gifts to speak for those who have been silenced by the mindless, insensitive, so-called Celtic Tiger economy and its worshippers.
Some day that "tiger" will turn on those who exploit it at the expense of the vulnerable. What will happen then? - Yours, etc., Joan De Vere Jennings,
Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
