Sir, – I have noticed that the term “heavy lifting” has become the accepted jargon for various commentators and politicians when describing an important contribution which someone may have made to a negotiation position, a draft Bill or other such process.
In my young days on a farm in Co Meath, heavy lifting was carrying an 18 stone (112 kg) barrel bag of corn on one’s back up a flight of stone steps to a loft.
