Sir, – In the Angelus debate, is there any chance correspondents on the subject could append their age to their letters.
I’d hazard a guess the argument for retention can be broken down along age lines with the fogeys firmly in favour.
I believe its retention is unjustifiable.

Sir, – “Ireland is a secular state. It is time the national broadcaster fell into line.”
I cannot agree with Wesley Boyd.
May I offer an alternative soundbite? “Ireland is a grown-up and varied society. We are happy to allow a little broadcasting time to mark the religious observance of one of our groups.”
This is better than being whipped into line in the name of secular conformity.

DENIS HEALY,
Salthill,
Galway. Sir, – Before this issue develops into a right old ding-dong, perhaps all the participants in the debate should check that they have a valid TV licence. Otherwise it might be their doorbell ringing instead.
