Sir, – Of the likely possibilities in the Westminster elections, the SNP supporting a minority Labour government would probably be the best outcome for Ireland.
If a Conservative-led government is returned, Brexit becomes quite possible, with serious consequences for the whole island.
If the SNP shows that it can operate constructively in Westminster in the interests of the whole of the UK, it might lessen the demand in the short term for a further independence referendum in Scotland.
The SNP might even manage to hold Labour to socialist principles, but perhaps that would prove too much even for Nicola Sturgeon. – Yours, etc,
