Sir, – The resignation of DUP MLA Jim Wells as Northern Ireland’s minister for health, following criticism of his claim that children who are raised by same-sex parents are “more likely” to be abused, is to be welcomed.
The DUP has for decades led verbal and legal assaults on gay people. From its Save Ulster from Sodomy campaign, to its opposition to civil partnership, to its current proposed conscience clause.
Outrageous comments by elected representatives which would be a cause of opprobrium in any civilised society worldwide are not alone tolerated but widely trumpeted by many seeking election.
There appears to be an absence of internal recognition within the DUP regarding the offence their publicly stated views on homosexuality cause. This must be challenged from outside. A collective undertaking from the primary political parties in the forthcoming British general election not to enter government with the DUP as partners would be a good start. – Yours, etc,
TOM COOPER,
Templeogue,

Sir, – Catholics in Northern Ireland who value the magisterium of the Catholic Church should shun tribal loyalties and vote Democratic Unionist. Such a tactical vote could well have a significant influence in some constituencies, where the nationalist vote is divided. As for the Republic of Ireland, perhaps the DUP could help set up a political party reflecting Christian values.
Better a divided Christian Ireland than a united secular one. – Yours, etc,
ROBERT IAN WILLIAMS,
Wrexham.
