A chara, – Tourism Ireland is making a big effort to shroud some of the most famous landmarks in the world in the colour green for St Patrick’s day to promote Ireland (Home News, February 14th).

Have they forgotten that there is another, brighter colour associated with Ireland? One of the colours on our national flag? A colour that represents a significant amount of the people of Ireland? A colour that links Ireland directly with at least two European states (the Netherlands and France)? The colour orange is legitimately entitled to be used as a colour to represent Ireland.

By not using orange, a significant portion of the people of Ireland and Irish identity is not being represented or remains invisible to the rest of the world. If the aim of lighting up famous landmarks is to inform people around the world about Ireland then the whole of Ireland should be represented.
