Sir, – Where is the sense in introducing 16 new penalty points (Home News, December 31st) to motorists and other road users when the Garda Síochána does not have the manpower to enforce those already existing?
Motorists use mobile phones and drive in bus lanes, feeling fairly sure they will not be caught, while cyclists ignore traffic signals almost all the time. Anybody found breaking the law and then penalised will be more careful in future, but for one person caught, how many get away with it? Will the new points make any difference to safety? – Yours, etc,
