A chara, - What is it about golf and golfers that so raises the hackles of your columnists? The sport is enjoyed by thousands of perfectly harmless people like me. None of God's creatures is beaten, shot, or torn limb from limb in the course of it. Golf has an ethos of courtesy and absolute honesty which is unique in my experience.

A fine golf course is as aesthetically pleasing as a great park or garden. Kevin Myers should try it some time, but, considering lamentable recent pieces in which he pilloried the late John Charles McQuaid and Eoin O'Duffy, I suspect he might find the rough more often than the fairway. - Is mise,
