WHEELCHAIRS AND THE DART

BARRY KENNY,

BARRY KENNY,

Sir, - Regarding the contention by Ailesbury Park Residents' Association that Iarnród Éireann is "dragging its wheels" on accessibility improvements at Sydney Parade DART station (August 30th), the company has in fact committed funding to a new turnstile gate with disabled access facilities at the station, and this work will be completed before the end of this year.

Since the return of investment to our rail network in the mid-1990s, Iarnród Éireann has actively ensured, in consultation with representative groups, that designs for all new and upgraded stations, as well as new DART, suburban and Enterprise carriages, have incorporated facilities for mobility-impaired and sensory-impaired customers.

There is, of course, much still to be done, but we will continue to ensure that all of our customers gain the benefit of the largest ever investment in Irish railways. - Yours, etc.,
