Sir, – If, as Freya McClements reports, the Traditional Unionist Voice leader Jim Allister is of the view that the "union is over", why has not the penny dropped? ("Unionists say ruling shows protocol has changed North's status", News, July1st). Surely, the real lesson from the NI High Court ruling on the Brexit Withdrawal Act is that the Conservative Party in the UK has no difficulty whatsoever in overriding the Acts of Union in pursuit of electoral gains.
In light of the restrained reaction from non-unionist parties in the North and the studied silence from the Irish Government, might it not be prudent for unionist politicians to now look more towards the South for more support and reassurance in relation to constitutional and political stability. – Yours, etc,
MARTIN McDONALD, Terenure, Dublin 12.
