BETTY MAHER,
Sir, - Paul Cullen's article (The Irish Times, December 31st) on the decision by the Catholic bishops to move various church agencies to Maynooth is thought-provoking, and in particular the statement: "at least one commission, on the laity, has ceased to function".
If this be the case, then whither the much talked-of consultative process between clergy and laity? Whither lay involvement in the church's ministry? Whither the vision of Vatican II? Actions speak louder than words.
Or is it that John Charles McQuaid was right all those years ago when, on his return from the council, he assured his flock that nothing would change?
Whither the laity in 2002? And, without the laity, whither the church? - Yours, etc.,
BETTY MAHER,
