Sir, – Colin Walsh's letter (May 19th) mentioned "from the cyclist's perspective the benefits of cycling can come at a very high cost". In May 2015, as a cyclist on my daily commute in Dublin, I was struck by an approaching motorist who turned right in front of me. I was catapulted onto the car bonnet. The traumatic experience put an end to me commuting to work by bike.
Increased education of motorists about driving safely on roads shared with vulnerable road users will be beneficial and is needed. However, much more needs to be done by way of improvement and upgrading of urban cycling infrastructure to reduce the risk of cyclists colliding with motorists. Otherwise more cyclists like me will not return to commuting to work by bike.
There have been some ad hoc improvements in Dublin in recent times but the overall quality of infrastructure for commuting cyclists is at best static, if not in decline. – Yours, etc,
MARK FOX,
Shankill,
Dublin 18.
