Sir, - It is depressing to read that the one organisation set up to represent the rights of women in society - the NWCI - has decided not to meet, support and inform the Women on Waves representative (letters, May 11th). Women on Waves is not an "abortion ship", but rather a courageous initiative to reach out to vulnerable women everywhere with information on contraception, health and education.
At a time when the US has withdrawn all funding from any international group which supplies reproductive information to women in developing countries, the NWCI should show a bit of backbone, rather than adopting the spineless mantra: "We take no position on the abortion issue." Shame on them. - Yours, etc.,
