Sir, - With respect to both Mr Wijngaards and Fr O'Hanlon, subtle argument and glib theological statements do not make a Christian. Both sides of the women priests argument will find something from scripture and the tomes of the early church to justify their own stance and the debate could go on forever. As Melanchthon had it: "To know Christ is not to speculate about the mode of his Incarnation, but to know his saving benefits".
Using what we know about Jesus Christ, can we really believe that he would want half of humankind barred from holding any office? - Yours, etc.,
Elaine Murray, Greystones, Co Wicklow.
