Sir, – Eamonn McCann ("More rights for women in Sierra Leone than Ireland", Opinion & Analysis, January 14th) appears to be under the delusion that Sierra Leone is some sort of example to Ireland in terms of women's rights.
He ignores the fact that, according to Unicef, 88 per cent of women there have undergone female genital mutilation and the country has some of the highest maternal death rates in the world.
The average life expectancy at birth is 48 years.
Until Israel donated a dialysis machine in 2014, Sierra Leone, with a population of six million people, did not have a single one.
