Madam, - Having spent most of my life as a teacher, I decided on retirement that there was still much more to learn. Last September I enrolled in the M.A. course in Women's Studies in UCD.
The subjects include politics, psychology, sociology, economics and history, post-modern theory, the art of autobiography, the history and appreciation of art and popular culture. The course is challenging and demanding and ranks with similar courses in universities around the world. Women's studies serves to break down the patriarchal barriers in society and to eliminate prejudice and sexism such as that expressed in Sean McDonagh's letter of January 12th.
In a world torn apart by greed, poverty, starvation and irresponsible government, it is encouraging to note that the other half of the human race is ready to take her place in sharing the burden and meeting the challenge of creating a more equitable, safer and therefore a happier world. Congratulations, UCG. - Yours, etc.,
