Madam, - Áine Ghiollagáin (November 28th) refers to the unpaid work done by "at-home" mothers setting up playgroups and providing informal care to the children of mothers working in the formal economy.

This "informal" work is unregulated and takes place outside the tax net. At the end of the day it cannot be regarded as beneficial to the economy or the state as a whole.

If women choose not to work in the formal economy and still expect wages for their work, I suggest they work out a payment schedule with their employers (their partners and husbands) and stop looking for payment from the hard-earned taxes paid by women for whom going out to work in the formal economy is the only option. - Is mise,
