Sir, - "Heroes"? To me they are people like those who spared no thought for themselves as they rushed into the wreckage of the World Trade Centre to try to rescue family, friends, or complete strangers.

Sir, - Guinness has been roasted over its insensitive use of their pint logo by superimposing it on the national flag in the company's World Cup promotion. There was, obviously, a lack of understanding of the inviolability of our national emblem for this sort of thing by those who came up with the idea.
However, they have had the good grace to admit they got it wrong and have apologised for the mistake - never more forcefully than the corporate affairs director, Mr Pat Barry, on the Marian Finucane show recently.
But at least nobody died. Compare the innocent mistake by Guinness with the behaviour of those who front for an illegal organisation that has killed and maimed innocent Irish men, women and children.
They have had no hesitation of usurping the national flag in support of their claim that they act on our behalf. And there are those among us who, naively, believe they do. - Yours, etc.,

Sir, - Shane Robinson (June 21st) claims that in future Irish players may prefer to put the ball wide rather than face Joe Duffy on stage in the Phoenix Park. Well, next time round I look foward to seeing his nomination for the Joe Duffy's task. He was merely trying to raise the spirits of a visibly distraught team.
