Madam, - In agreeing with Toby Joyce (February 22nd) that President Bush is the "worst US president ever", Jerry Crowley (March 1st) stoops to a new low in anti-Americanism.
He describes the United States as Ireland's current "imperial enemy". Does he or his fellow-travellers never pause for even one second to look beyond the tripe with which we are served daily by most of our left-wing, liberal looney media? Do they never read or hear what the real and present enemy states repeatedly: that Islamism is going to conquer Western civilisation and subject us all to Sharia law?
Do they not understand that without the United States and, to a lesser extent, Great Britain, we would all be staring at a possible future in which non-Muslims lucky (or unfortunate) enough to remain alive would be classed and treated as second-class residents ("dhimmis"). Do they not see the murder and mayhem being perpetrated by Islamist extremists in numerous pockets of the world in the name of Jihad?
Do they not understand that it is not Americans who are committing daily suicide bomb murders, but it is Americans who are trying to keep the peace between factions that cannot live peaceably with each other?
Let's not hear futile comments that the Americans should not be in Iraq in the first place: if a minority of Iraqi natives stopped killing each other and got on with helping the majority to build their country, the United States could leave.
I believe history will see President Bush as a brave man with the courage to hear and act upon what is being said by our enemy; a man who, despite being pilloried as stupid and useless, continues on his mission to save Western civilisation (yes, including Europe - indeed, primarily Europe) from being dragged back into the Middle Ages. The US economy is in fine shape; he could just sit back and be hailed as a good president for his country; but he has chosen to fight the greatest threat to the West and Christianity since we were last overrun by Islamism.- Yours, etc,
