Sir, - I am very saddened by the death of the sculptor Yann Renard Goulet, RHA. His work combined a wonderful imagination and superb style.
In the excellent appreciation by Aidan Dunne there is one small mistake. The competition for the Custom House Memorial in 1950 was won by the late John Kavanagh, who could not begin the work because he left Ireland to become professor of sculpture in Auckland College of Art in New Zealand. I was involved with him in designing the site layout.
Yann Renard Goulet's inspiring figure for the Custom House Memorial was placed next and it will always remain, with his other fine public monuments, as a great tribute to a great sculptor. - Yours, etc.
