Younger voters

Sir, – Laura Harmon, president of the Union of Students in Ireland, congratulates the young "for voting in such large numbers in the recent referendums" ("Empower and engage the young and they will vote", Opinion & Analysis, June 25th).

She ignores the fact that they voted for the issue (marriage equality) which affected a relatively small minority but got positive media hype, but seemed not to have voted for the issue (eligibility for president) which affected a bigger minority, themselves included, but which got negative media hype.

Ms Harmon says the “there is a young vote there to be courted in the upcoming election”. While that is true, it seems that the influences which help them decide how to vote are no different to those affecting the rest of the electorate. – Yours, etc,
