CHARLES BAGWELL,
Madam, - It appears there is to be zero official tolerance for even the most minor speeding infringement. This is with the laudable aim of reducing accidents and road deaths.
In the same spirit, can the relevant Ministers also reassure us that from now on there will be zero official tolerance for the following: apparently arbitrary speed limits; inadequate and poorly sited signs of all kinds; absent or inconsistent road markings, e.g. solid white centre lines where overtaking is safe, and broken ones where it is dangerous; road markings and signs which are inconsistent with one another; sudden converging of lanes with little or no warning; traffic lights which cannot be seen properly in bright sunlight; poorly and inconsistently designed junctions and slip lanes, especially on the M50 but also at most major intersections; terrible sight lines; "temporary" signs which remain in place for months if not years - for example the right-turn-only sign for the outer lane approaching the Red Cow from Newlands Cross?
Any chance we could have a relevant test for today's traffic conditions for all those people suddenly desperate to get full licences? And will we have air traffic control to reduce the risk of collision with all the flying pigs? - Yours
etc.,
CHARLES BAGWELL,
Millbrook,
Co Kildare.
