Sir, - Having returned from one of my frequent walks through the UCD campus in Belfield, I wish to draw attention to the deteriorating level of environmental awareness in the college. The entire perimeter of the campus is strewn with litter of every variety: aluminium cans, plastic bags, bottles, empty cigarette packets. Litter is visible in open spaces also and in the car parks. It is disturbing that no effort appears to have been made over the past several months to clear up. The current state of the campus is such that I would be embarrassed to take a foreign visitor for a walk through it. As a nation, we have a deserved reputation for being among Europe's worst litter louts and it is saddening to find that our track record extends to one of the country's major seats of learning. The state of the Belfield campus speaks volumes about the concern for the environment - or rather lack of it - shown by the student body in UCD. It reflects equally badly on the management entrusted with the care and maintenance of the college grounds. The frequency with which new buildings have been appearing across the campus in recent times suggests that financial constraints are not a reason for the woeful disregard for the environment. May I respectfully suggest that some of the college's funds be invested in providing a campus in which students and management alike can feel a sense of pride. - Yours, etc.,D.N.
