The German DAX index of 30 leading shares closed at a record high yesterday, driven by gains in bond prices and by the Dow Jones index which ended overnight above 6,200 points for first time.

French shares closed in negative ground after racking up major gains this week. Domestic funds locked up some of their profits ahead of a long weekend and in anticipation of a Wall Street hangover to the week-long party, traders said.
