LEISUREWEAR manufacturers, Fruit of the Loom, confirmed yesterday that more than 2,000 employees at its plants in Derry and Donegal were to remain on a three-day working week for at least an additional three months.

The three-day working week was introduced last June. Originally it was to have lasted until the end of the year, but the anticipated growth in demand in Europe for the company's products has failed to materialise.

Meanwhile, the US-owned Dupont confirmed that employees at its Neoprene plant at Maydown, on the outskirts of Derry, have been offered an early retirement package. A company spokesperson declined to confirm or deny reports that the offer had been made to 100 members of staff.
