Sir, - As a new resident in Dublin from Canada, I am dismayed at the amount of litter on Dublin streets, a blight on the face of what is otherwise a beautiful city. I pick up enough litter in front of my house each week to fill a shopping bag. I see street sweepers regularly on Grafton Street - presumably because this is a tourist area; but what about the residential streets and other shopping areas?
The more litter there is on the streets, the more people will drop litter, because it seems like it doesn't matter any more. A clean-up campaign could start at the individual level by each resident and business picking up litter in front of their premises. Then we need a widespread anti-litter campaign of public education starting with the children and young people (not just a few signs on banners along Grafton and Henry Street) and a street clean-up in high litter areas. If your are not part of the solution, your are part of the problem. - Yours, etc.,
Carol Clarke, Anglesea Road, Dublin 4.
