Paddy Whelan 1935-2014: Life through his lens

NEWS: Paddy Whelan's primary role was as a news photographer. This photo was all about him being in the right place at the right time. Dutch industrialist Tieda Herrema was kidnapped by a Republican gang led by Eddie Gallagher and Marian Coyle. The gang was traced and found in a housing estate in Monasterevin, Co Kildare. After a siege lasting two weeks, Herrema was freed on November 8th, 1975. A bearded Gallagher is shown here being escorted away from the house by gardai.

NEWS: On March 16th 1988, Whelan was on hand to witness and photograph the Milltown Cemetery attack. During the funeral of three Provisional IRA members killed in Gibraltar, an Ulster Defence Association (UDA) volunteer, Michael Stone, attacked the mourners with hand grenades and pistols. As Stone ran towards the nearby motorway, a large crowd began chasing him and he continued shooting and throwing grenades. Some of them caught him and began beating him, but he was rescued by the police and arrested. Three people were killed and more than 60 wounded.
