In the week when the conflict in Ukraine marks its first anniversary, Daniel McLaughlin talks to In the News about the visit to the city by US president Joe Biden on Monday; explains Putin’s military objectives at this stage in the war and the role of Russia’s brutal army of mercenaries, the Wagner Group. He also assesses Ukraine’s slow move to EU membership.

In the past week McLaughlin has been to Lviv and Bucha and as he heads to Kharkiv to report for The Irish Times on how the people of Ukraine are enduring the brutal onslaught, he explains why this anniversary of the war will not be the last.
