The 41-year-old Murphy has now completed 10 years as a TD in Dublin South West having first been elected in the 2014 by-election on an anti-water charges campaign.
Murphy describes himself as an eco-socialist. Despite losing the working class areas of Tallaght-Fettercairn to Dublin Mid-West, Murphy managed to improve his first preference vote this time around from 4,477 to 5,081.
His wife Jess Spear is a People Before Profit councillor in Tallaght Central. Their child Juniper was born last year and was present at the count on Sunday. Mr Murphy said in an interview with The Irish Times that the couple had decided to name their child Juniper whether it was a boy or girl and they were not “gendering” their baby. This prompted a furious row in the Dáil recently when Independent Kerry TD Danny Healy Rae said Murphy didn’t know whether his own child was a boy or a girl.
Murphy told him off in unparliamentary terms and was backed by colleagues from other parties in the Dáil.
