To paraphrase the old French adage, the more things have changed in the Dublin South West constituency the more they have stayed the same.

Despite a substantial redrawing of the constituency boundaries which saw working class Fettercairn and Tallaght go to Dublin Mid-West to be replaced by the middle-class areas of Terenure-Cherryfield, four of the five sitting TDs were comfortably re-elected.

Sinn Féin’s Seán Crowe was once again the poll topper thought his vote was substantially down on 2020 as he had a running mate Cllr Niamh Whelan. The party lost out by a slim margin on a second seat in the constituency.

Fine Gael’s Colm Brophy, Fianna Fáil’s John Lahart and People Before Profit’s Paul Murphy were also re-elected.

The big winner was Labour councillor Ciaran Ahern who was elected at the second time of asking in the constituency and whose victory marked a memorable day for the Labour Party in Dublin after the dramatic win of Maria Sherlock earlier in the day in Dublin Central.

The big loser from the count in Dublin South-West was Green Party TD Noel Francis Duffy who polled just 1,931 first preference votes. His wife, the Government minister Catherine Martin, lost her seat in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown.
