Since the launch of the Green Awards in 2008, Ireland has come a long way in its efforts to create a greener and more sustainable future. Nonetheless, there is still an incredible amount of work to be done if we are to meet both our greenhouse emission and carbon targets.
That is why it is vitally important to recognise those who are leaders within this area and inspiring change across a multitude of industries. The recently announced shortlist for the Green Awards 2019 highlights an array of organisations who are pushing the envelope, when it comes to securing a greener future for our island. Companies from both the private and public sector are standing out as examples for what can be achieved with a green mindset.
Speaking about the calibre of this year’s nominees, one of this year’s expert panel of judges, Padraig Ryan, associate director of business consulting at Grant Thornton Ireland, said: “Businesses realise that it is no longer sufficient to recycle or use energy efficient light bulbs. Sustainability is becoming a key differentiator for businesses. The 2019 entries have been of a very high standard with some really innovative submissions that demonstrate how Irish businesses are at the forefront of sustainability.”
Long-time sponsor, Energia’s manager of energy services Cormac Mannion spoke to the value of having awards to recognise green companies. “Energia are proud to be a sponsor of the Green Awards since 2012. The event is to the forefront of innovation in best green practice and sustainability In Ireland. This ensures that Energia can celebrate the achievements with companies committed towards a greener future in Irish business,” he said.
At this year’s Green Awards, the judges will preside over 22 categories, with An Post among the nominees. Speaking to the honour, John Smith, head of sustainability and facilities at An Post said: “An Post is delighted to be shortlisted for the prestigious Green Awards. An Post as a previous winner of a Green Award appreciates their value. In winning the Award we developed further traction in our sustainability initiatives and it validated the effort of our staff and business partners”
Reacting to the news of being shortlisted for the Green Manufacturer Award, Intel Ireland’s external relations manager Lisa Harlow said: “Intel is very proud to be shortlisted for the Green award again in 2019. We are committed to promoting sustainable practices and we continually strive to improve our performance. Being shortlisted confirms that the efforts of our staff are being positively benchmarked against the best practices of leading companies operating in Ireland.”
Sponsor of the Green Awards 2019, Naturgy, spoke to the importance of reducing Ireland’s carbon footprint. Barry Murphy, their commercial director, said: “Naturgy are proud to be supporting the Green Awards 2019. Naturgy prides itself on its unrivalled expertise of the energy marketplace assisting our business customers with reducing energy consumption, cost and carbon emissions. We feel it is important to acknowledge the achievements of organisations in the area of sustainability as we all move towards a low carbon future.”
