Irish Construction Industry Awards shortlist announced

As the construction sector continues its recovery, the Awards return to give a chance to reflect on recent achievements and examine growing trends within the industry

The Irish Construction Industry Awards, in association with Volkswagen Ireland, return for its fifth year, on the 14th of June, as the construction sector continues to grow in Ireland, in the face of some big challenges.

Despite issues such as Storm Emma and the noted skills shortage, the sector has continued to build on its 18 per cent growth in 2017. The awards present the perfect opportunity to reflect on some of the highlights of the past 12 months, while strategically looking to the rest of the year.

Judging co-ordinator Leo Harmon, C.Eng. MCIOB. Dip Project Management, spoke about his own observations within the sector, while discussing the announcement of the shortlist of candidates for the awards:

“2017 has seen the construction industry return to some normality but is still only 66 per cent of the average spend of its European partners. Nonetheless, the level and quality of submissions for this year’s Irish Construction Industry Awards is a clear indication that we are well on the path to full recovery. It is interesting to note that submissions are reflecting a very strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation. There are clear signs that clients want a more innovative approach to both the design and delivery of projects so that their buildings are easier and more cost efficient to maintain including the sustainability of the products they use. Another noticeable trend is the high standards that are being achieved across the whole construction spectrum in health and safety.”

One of the companies shortlisted is Sisk, who have been nominated for Innovation in Construction and also for their role in the Vertium Building, Burlington Road, in the category Commercial Project of the Year – Large. Speaking about their nomination, Brian Comaskey, Senior Contracts Manager said:

“Sisk was delighted to be a key member of the team responsible for the successful delivery of such a prestigious project as the Vertium Building, and we are delighted it has been nominated for this award. As well as its aesthetic appeal, innovative design features and sustainable aspects, it was identified right from the outset that collaboration across all the stakeholders (including Dublin City Council, local resident groups and businesses) was vital to ensure all challenges were addressed and a project everyone can be proud of was delivered and now stands on Burlington Road.”

Scott Tallon Walker are another company who have made the shortlist, with three of their buildings nominated. Director, Brian Roe said, "Scott Tallon Walker is delighted to have had three buildings shortlisted in the ICI Awards this year, and we are looking forward to the awards ceremony, with bated breath."

Volkswagen Ireland are returning headline sponsors for this years awards. Speaking ahead of the big night, Alan Bateson, Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland said: "Our partnership with the Irish Construction Industry Awards as main sponsor gives us an excellent opportunity to celebrate and recognise the benchmark achievements within the Construction Industry which is one of the largest customer segments for the brand in Ireland."

As a platinum sponsor, Crown Roofing are playing a key role in the awards, and their CEO Emma O'Gorman explained why it's such an important event to be part of:

“Crown Roofing was the platinum sponsor at last year’s Irish Construction Awards and are delighted to sponsor again this year. We made the decision to sponsor again because we believe this event is a great opportunity for our company to get in front of the key decision makers in our industry. It is a high profile, very professionally run event and one that we are very proud to be associated with.

“Last year, post awards, we received so much positive feedback from clients, staff, employees and people in our business network who were aware we sponsored the event. The Awards were a key marketing activity for us last year as they will be this year. We strongly believe our sponsorship of the awards helps boost our profile and establish our company as, ‘The Roofing and Cladding Partner of Choice’.”
