One of the many things that the pandemic has highlighted is the huge importance of all the work done in laboratories. But there is more to laboratory work than discovering and developing vaccines.

Now in its ninth year, the Irish Laboratory Awards celebrates  the hard work and innovation that goes on in laboratories across almost every sector of the Irish economy. The winners of the 2021 awards were announced on Thursday, April 29th in front of a live audience at a virtual ceremony. The event was presided over by the comedian and broadcaster Colm O’Regan, while the judging panel was led by Matt Moran, director at BioPharmaChem Ireland.

Fourteen awards were handed out in all, and the National Virus Reference Laboratory at UCD came away with two of them, winning the Commercial Laboratory of the Year and the Healthcare Laboratory of the Year.

“We thank the Irish Laboratory Awards for recognising the work of the UCD NVRL,” said Cillian De Gascun, director at the National Virus Reference Laboratory. “However, we represent a much larger team, including the HSE, DoH, HPSC and laboratory partners nationally, without whose support our response would not have been possible.”

In total, 21 individuals and organisations were shortlisted for this year’s awards, one of which was Lennox. “We were honoured to be recognised in the Laboratory Supplier of the Year category,” said chief executive Leslie Brett. “As an Irish company with a 100-year history, this recognition is testament to the hard work of our entire team, who are dedicated to delivering custom solutions for our customers.”

The 2021 awards ceremony was an extremely successful event for participants and organisers alike. And, as ever, it was only made possible thanks to the generous support of its principal sponsor, CBRE Global Workplace Solutions.
