Shortlist announced for 2018 Building and Architect of the Year Awards

The Building and Architect of the Year Awards are back for their second year, with the standard of entries indicative of the continued growth and innovation in Ireland

2017 Building and Architect of the Year Awards

After a hugely successful inaugural year, the Building and Architect of the Year Awards return this October for a second instalment. The shortlist for the Awards – which will take place on the October 4th – has been announced, with leaders and innovators recognised across 18 different categories.

The building and architect profession has continued to expand in 2018, with August being the 60th consecutive month of growth. With further investment announced in the government's National Planning Framework, the demand on the design community is ever-growing and many are rising to the challenge. Derry Kearney, associate at Cundall, heads this year's judging panel for the Awards and he has been highly impressed with the standard of entries:

“This was my first year as a judge for the Building and Architect of the Year Awards and it has been a great experience. All of the companies nominated are excelling in their respective fields and some stood out more than others. The entrants should all be so proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

Mola Architecture are nominated in two categories – Building of the Year - Large Office and Multi-discipline Collaboration Achievement – for their work on famed Dublin location, 1 Windmill Lane. Ralph Bingham, director and architect at Mola Architecture, reacted to their achievement; "Mola Architecture are delighted to be associated with 1 Windmill Lane which has been shortlisted in this year's Awards.  1WML represents our largest mixed use commercial project to date and incorporated inputs from our masterplanners, architects and interior designers, providing a full design service to our wonderful client Hibernia REIT."

The Multi-discipline Collaboration Achievement shortlist also features Henry J Lyons Architects, who are nominated in four different categories. Also shortlisted in Building of the Year - Large Office, Building of the Year – Educational and Housing Project of the Year, their chairman, Paul O'Brien said; "Being shortlisted for one of the Building and Architect of the Year Awards categories is particularly important to us especially when we are all striving to create better workplaces that fit within our cities. It provides great encouragement to ourselves, our clients, and to all who have been involved with the project."

Sponsors of this year's Awards include Fiontar Safety Management. Their managing director, Stuart Jameson, explained why they decided to get involved; "Fiontar Safety Management believes that safe construction is good construction. As leaders in health, safety and environmental, these awards are the perfect platform for connecting with clients and sharing with potent clients the impact our 'pathway to success' can have. We are excited to be involved with the Awards and are looking forward to a great night."

Versatile will also be a sponsor on the night, with their managing director, Andrew Treacy saying; "As a design-focused Irish distributor specialising in exclusive bathroom and tile brands and technical heating, cooling and ventilation solutions, the Awards are an ideal platform for Versatile. We are looking forward to an incredible night that celebrates and supports the brightest innovators in the industry and to deepen relationships we have developed over the past 34 years."
