The global food chain currently operates in a way that has serious implications for our health, the community, environment, and economy, with an over-reliance on processed and unseasonal produce. Grow It Yourself sees the solution in supporting people to grow their own and change purchasing decisions towards fresh, local food. Through a national network of local growing groups and a range of online resources, GIY provides a grassroots structure and builds on the idea of the ‘meitheal’ – sharing ideas and skills – to encompass group learning around food growing. Campaigns to catalyse GIY in schools, among families and on unused land, have built the movement to 30,000 people.
