With an estimated 300,000 children in Ireland now overweight or obese, the importance of play has never been so relevant. Founded by American social entrepreneur Jill Vialet, Playworks creates inclusive environments for play and physical activity both within and beyond the school day to build empathy, increase learning, and improve behaviour. Research shows benefits to child development including an improved school climate and more focused students. Playworks trains teachers and community volunteers to re-imagine recreation time to increase physical activity among students while teaching valuable life lessons such as conflict resolution and teamwork. Playworks is looking to expand its reach to Ireland with two pilot projects planned for Dublin and Galway in 2013.
